Benefits Of Yoga For Women’s Health

In this blog post, we’ll be exploring the benefits of yoga for women’s health and how you can adjust your practice to align with your menstrual cycle for optimal well-being. Yoga for some time now in the West has been celebrated for its numerous health benefits, offering a holistic approach to physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

For women, yoga can be especially transformative, addressing unique health needs and enhancing overall quality of life. However, to maximize these benefits, it’s essential to tailor yoga practices to the different phases of the menstrual cycle. By adapting yoga routines to complement the natural rhythms of our bodies, women can harness the power of this ancient practice to support hormonal balance, alleviate menstrual discomfort, and promote a sense of harmony and vitality.

For women who are on hormonal contraception, do not have a menstrual cycle, or have transitioned through menopause, the practice of yoga can still be harmoniously adapted by following the phases of the moon. The lunar cycle, with its waxing and waning phases, mirrors the natural rhythms found in the menstrual cycle and can serve as a valuable guide for adjusting yoga routines. By aligning yoga practices with the moon’s cycles, women can still experience the cyclical benefits, promoting balance and well-being. This approach allows all women, regardless of their reproductive status, to connect deeply with their bodies and the natural world, fostering a sense of inner peace and alignment with the broader rhythms of life.

Adapting Your Practice

Below is a general guide you can follow when adapting your yoga practice to compliment the different phases of your menstrual cycle;

  • Menstrual Phase: Focus on gentle movement and deep breathing exercises to alleviate discomfort and promote relaxation. Avoid strenuous poses and inversions during heavy flow.
  • Follicular Phase: As energy levels increase, incorporate more dynamic and energising poses. This is a good time for building strength and stamina.
  • Ovulatory Phase: Prioritise poses that support the core, pelvic stability, and balance. Engage in inversions with caution if you’re comfortable with them.
  • Luteal Phase: Practice calming, restorative poses to ease any premenstrual symptoms and help with stress reduction.

Below is a diagram showing the time scale of a typical 28 day menstrual cycle, this will vary for each woman with some cycle lasting between 23-35 days.

Moving With The Moon

The diagram above shows how the moon phases can mirror the menstrual cycle and when your practice should be adapted if working with the phases of the moon.

The moon represents the feminine energy and cyclical change, similar to the cyclical change of the menstrual cycle; The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days long, which is roughly similar to the average length of a menstrual cycle, which can vary between 23-35 days.

Each week try adapting your practice to compliment and mimic the different energies of the moon.

  • New Moon: The new moon is a time of new beginnings, similar to the menstrual phase representing the shedding of the old and starting a new.
  • Waxing Moon: The waxing moon is associated with growth and energy building, paralleling the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle when energy levels are typically higher.
  • Full Moon: The full moon, often seen as a time of illumination and abundance, corresponds to the ovulatory phase, when fertility is at its peak.
  • Waning Moon: The waning moon is linked to release and letting go, akin to the menstrual and luteal phases when the body prepares for shedding the uterine lining.
